About Andalucía

An autonomous region in the south of Spain, bordering Castile-La Mancha in the north. The oldest wine-growing area in Spain. Today, the vineyards extend across 32,000 hectares, from the coast to elevations of over 1,000 metres above sea level. Production is focused primarily on white wines, including those from indigenous varieties such as Palomino, Pedro Ximénez and Vigiriego (Blanco).

The Chelva grape variety

A white grape variety originating from Spain or Portugal. Common synonyms include Mantúa (or Mantúo) in Spain and Diagalves in Portugal. This late-ripening vine is susceptible to Botrytis, Esca, millerandage and coulure (poor fruit set). It typically produces low-alcohol, low-acid white wines of modest quality, often with grassy aromas, and is also cultivated as a table grape. Plantings are now limited to fewer than 5,000 hectares in southern Spain and about 1,000 hectares in Portugal. Though young producers from the natural wine scene begin to pay attention again.
