Medium ruby red; thick tears in the glass indicate a degree of extraction. On the nose, a lovely, engaging, medium-bodied bouquet of red and dark fruits (cherry, blackberries, plum, with a hint of stewed fruit: prune) balanced by spicy nuances (cinnamon, cedarwood, orange zest) that betray a little of its maturation in French oak barriques, along with a touch of violet, though the primary fruit remains dominant. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with soft yet noticeable tannins and medium-plus acidity. Juicy and well-balanced, with real presence, it once again displays cherry, plum, redcurrant and blackberry. In the successful finish, vanilla and dark chocolate linger alongside the fruit. Today, it is noticeably more balanced and composed than during my previous tasting three years ago, while remaining fresh, vibrant, and still possessing power and potential for further development. Very good.

2019 Cold and dry winter. There was plenty of rain during spring, which helped replenish the water tables, but the cool temperatures delayed flowering by about two weeks compared to the long-term average. As is well-documented by now, the summer of 2019 was hot in Tuscany like in other parts of Europe, but there were enough showers to reduce the effect of drought, particularly towards the end of July. Although some producers in the hotter regions saw their yields reduced by heat stress, the wines produced in the Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino appellations are generally considered to be of very high quality. |
