Deep golden yellow with pronounced viscosity. On the nose — wow, intense — the wine practically leaps from the glass: candied fruit, dried apricot, orange zest, English breakfast marmalade, honey, lingering pale blossoms, and a touch of ethereal pine needles. Simply gorgeous and beguiling. It displays wonderful maturity whilst retaining remarkable freshness. On the palate, it is luscious and full-bodied, echoing with honey, faint vanilla, crème brûlée, apricot, alongside a subtle exoticism of dried mango, all sustained by a mouth-watering acidity — simply superb. Never-ending.
Drink through 2036.

1996 Very good vintage in Bordeaux, especially in the Médoc, with a good mix of warm temperatures and occassional rainfall when it was needed. For Pomerol and St. Émilion on the right bank, however, prolonged droughts throughout the summer and heavy concentrated rainstorms in August meant conditions were not as perfect for the Merlot grapes there, although eventually healthy grapes were picked there, too. Some excellent dry whites in Graves and sweet whites in Sauternes (perhaps the best vintage after the excellent 1990). |
