Clear, pale ruby colour, with garnet towards the rim. Medium-intensity bouquet of red berries; strawberry, cranberry, redcurrant; ripe, a little cooked and jammy even, with hints of butterscotch, though layered with an attractive scent of wild roses. On the palate, a medium body with soft tannins but noticeable alcohol. Lacking a certain depth of flavour. Warming, drying and a little bitter in the finish.

Pinot Précoce Noir Mutation of Pinot Noir. Synonyms include Frühburgunder, Blauer Frühburgunder, Früher Blauer Burgunder, Madeleine Noir, Vigne d’Ischia (in France) and many others. Usually ripens a little earlier than Pinot Noir. Harvest may begin about two weeks earlier, on average. Hence the name: Frühburgunder ("früh" is German and translates to "early"), whereas the German name for Pinot Noir is Spätburgunder ("spät" translates to "late"). Thick-skinned variety that can produce substantial wines, though generally not with the depth and longevity of Pinot Noir. |
