Tasting note

The 2018 Markus Molitor Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett (Goldkapsel) is just lots of fun: Molitor Kabinett Rieslings are amongst my favourites, and the Ürziger Würzgarten in particular is one of my goto Mosel vineyards. The clue is in the name: Wines from the “spice garden” benefit from the red volcanic stones that can be found here, revealing delicate spices that go well with the freshness of German Riesling and the sweetness of a Kabinett. Although Molitor bottled this wine as a “Goldkapsel” Riesling, I’d say the wine is more off-dry than full-on sweet. Very fresh on perfectly integrated acidity, minerality, fragrant herbs and sweet yellow fruits. Don’t mistake this for a dessert wine. It will pair well with grilled fish dishes, cheeses, slightly spicy Asian food or even a grilled steak. Yummy! Enjoyable now, but promises even greater drinking pleasure in the next 10 to 20 years.
