Daniel, most German domainers I talked to were basically thinking the same. DENIC could have auctioned the domains off itself and donate a part of the profits to charity. This way DENIC would have prevented the Sedo auction and other things such as registrars charging a non-refundable €500 flat fee for registrations of the new domains even if the registration attempts are not successful. It was also suggested that DENIC should make the domains available by lot in order to really guarantee equal opportunities. As it is now, most individual domainers will not have any realistic chance of getting the domain they want. Instead, it will be the large investors and corporations who will be able to purchase the domains.

Charley, the Sedo auction can be found here: http://sedo.de/search/searchresult.php4?language=us&partnerid=13838&auctionevent=sonderauktion

Thx for interesting update on the subject. For me it is still not clear why DENIC does it in a such way. Why not to sell them through auction and pass money to charity organization? They could do it with partner / partners.
