DENIC could have auctioned the domains off itself and donate a part of the profits to charity. This way DENIC would have prevented the Sedo auction and other things such as registrars charging a non-refundable €500 flat fee for registrations of the new domains even if the registration attempts are not successful. It was also suggested that DENIC should make the domains available by lot in order to really guarantee equal opportunities. As it is now, most individual domainers will not have any realistic chance of getting the domain they want. Instead, it will be the large investors and corporations who will be able to purchase the domains.
