The domains Patents.com and Patents.net belonged to a law firm which has disolved and therefore auctioned off these two premium domains. The buyer is Internet Real Estate Group (IREG), a big player in the domain industry. IREG focuses on buying premium generic domains instead of large portfolios. They own domains such as Software.com, Shop.com and Phone.com. Although they are more in the market of buying domains, they have sometimes sold domains from their portfolio. For example, they sold CreditCards.com for $2,750,000 in 2005.
Details of the Patents.com/.net deal were not disclosed, but I think it’s likely that the domains were sold for a price in the $1-2 million range.
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has acquired a 4% minority equity stake in CareerBuilder. The agreement to display CareerBuilder search results on Microsoft’s MSN network was extended through 2013. CareerBuilder will pay up to $443 million to Microsoft to be the exclusive job search engine on MSN.
Ron has a new cover story out at DNJournal.com. As always, Ron has written a great and highly interesting article which I urge you to read. It’s about domain investor and web developer Sahar Sarid. Many well-known domainers, including Frank Schilling and Rick Schwartz, say Sahar is one of the smartest and most successful domainers in the world. After he had moved from Israel to the USA, Sahar worked on an ice cream truck before he read about the $7.5 million business.com sale after which he decided to invest in domain names.

FYI, Sahar has a blog at Conceptualist.com, which you should check out, too. You’ll find some thought-provoking posts there!
