VeriSign (NASDAQ: VRSN) released their 2007 Domain Name Industry Brief. According to the report, there were more than 120 million domain names registered at the end of 2006, which is a 32% jump over 2005. VeriSign says much of the fast growth of domain registrations comes from ccTLDs (country-code top level domains). For example, more than 500,000 domains were registered under the Chinese .cn TLD in the fourth quarter of 2006 alone. The most widely used gTLDs (generic top level domains) .com and .net have experienced great growth rates, too. There were more than 65 million .com/.net domains registered at the end of last year (up from 50 million at the end of 2005 and from 38 million at the end of 2004). The number of registered international character domain names (IDNs) increased even 89% compared to 2005.
