This morning eBay was the victim of a cybersquatter! The company’s German domain is currently not available on the Internet. According to the whois data, the domain is owned by eBay again, but the nameservers have not been updated yet. The whois said that it was a private person from Germany who snapped the domain. It’s not sure how this person could get eBay’s domain, however. What are the consequences for eBay? Well, it’s for sure that the financial damage caused by this new case of cybersquatting is huge!
Update: ebay.de was transfered to a customer of the internet service provider “intergenia” who tried to register the two domain names “amazon.de” and “ebay.de”, so the domain transfer was started automatically. Amazon did not allow to transfer the domain, but eBay’s system said OK. So the domain ebay.de was transfered to intergenia. But the provider was quite cooperative and the domain was given back to eBay short after that.
